Sūrah Al-LaylThe Night · Makkah · 21 āyāt · 4 movements

A ninth-revealed Makkan surah that opens with a triple oath — night, day, and the creation of male and female — to establish that human striving splits into two irreconcilable paths: one who gives and fears Allah, and one who withholds and considers himself self-sufficient. It closes by naming the most God-fearing believer, who purifies himself by giving his wealth seeking nothing but the Face of his Lord, Most High — a description early exegetes tied directly to Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq رضي الله عنه and his ransoming of persecuted, enslaved believers such as Bilāl رضي الله عنه.

Occasion & setting

Quraysh's chieftains were torturing the weak and enslaved who had accepted Islam, hoping to force them back to disbelief. Some wealthy Muslims began spending their fortunes to free these believers, most famously Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq رضي الله عنه, who purchased and freed Bilāl ibn Rabāḥ رضي الله عنه and several others while gaining nothing worldly from it — indeed some of the freed slaves went on to serve other households, so his critics asked why he freed them 'for nothing'.
