Sūrah Al-QiyāmahThe Resurrection · Makkah · 40 āyāt · 5 movements

A Makkan surah, 31st revealed, built around the deniers' question 'when is the Day of Resurrection?' It opens with a double oath answering that doubt, then interrupts itself to correct the Prophet ﷺ for rushing his lips to keep up with revelation, describes the terror of the dying moment and the Day itself, and closes by asking man to look at his own beginning — a drop of fluid — as proof that his ending is no harder for Allah to arrange.

Occasion & setting

Some of Makkah's disbelievers mocked the promise of resurrection, asking mockingly when it would occur, as though a scattered, decayed body could never be reassembled. In the middle of answering them, the surah pauses to address something happening to the Prophet ﷺ himself: his urgency to memorise the Qur'an as it was being revealed.

Key messages

· The Day some deny is proven by what none of them can deny: their own death.
· A conscience that reproaches itself is a mercy, not a burden — Allah swears by it.
· Denial of accountability is often the wish to keep sinning, dressed as a question about timing.
· Even sincere zeal — the Prophet's ﷺ eagerness to memorise revelation — can be gently corrected when Allah has already guaranteed the outcome.
· The believers' greatest reward described here is not a place but a sight: looking at their Lord.
· No physician, wealth, or status can hold back the soul once its appointed time arrives.
· Man's own biological origin — a drop of fluid — is offered as the proof, not a distraction, for his resurrection.
· To imagine life has no reckoning attached (sudan) is the very illusion the whole surah is built to dismantle.
