A Makkan surah named for the mother of ʿĪsā عليه السلام, built from a chain of private, tearful supplications — Zakariyyā for a son, Maryam in her isolation, Ibrāhīm with his father — before turning to a roll-call of prophets and a firm rebuttal of the claim that Allah has a son. It is the surah Jaʿfar ibn Abī Ṭālib recited before the Negus of Abyssinia, and it moved him to tears.

Occasion & setting

Quraysh had escalated their persecution of the weaker Muslims. The Prophet ﷺ sent a group of Companions to seek refuge with the Negus (al-Najāshī), the Christian king of Abyssinia. Quraysh sent ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ and ʿAbdullāh ibn Abī Rabīʿah after them, asking the Negus to hand the Muslims back, and accusing them of insulting ʿĪsā and his mother.
